Gnomon Wise's Research Project on Soviet Political Jokes

Using humour to adapt to complicated daily life or to express harsh criticism is not new in the Georgian society. Jokes created during the 70-year Soviet occupation are one of the clear proofs of this. However, these jokes were not only a Georgian product but familiar to the entire Soviet space. Jokes varied only slightly depending on the Soviet republics and the periods of government itself. Moreover, the jokes of the Soviet period are still relevant in some post-Soviet countries, especially for modern Russia. The return of Soviet black humour in the context of the 2022 Russia-Ukraine war is particularly striking.
